Greater
Philadelphia Cares offers Reading STARS four ways.
- Experience Corps
Two to four times a week during the school day, area seniors lend their
expertise and their time tutoring first, second, and third graders right
at their schools. GPC
is partnering with Temple University to match seniors to schools, and the
resulting reading relationships are producing impressive results, as children
get up to grade level and tutors see first hand what an impact they can have.
- Student Tutors
All that's needed to be an effective Reading STARS tutor is a fifth-grade
reading level; training and scripted materials do the rest. At some
of schools, older students are teaching younger ones the basics. Along
the way, all become better readers.
- Corporate Sites
Local companies are doing their part, bringing local students to their
place of business so their employees can tutor during the work day. These
weekly (sometimes more) sessions are efficiency in motion, as students get
the regular one-on-one attention they need to improve their reading skills
and employee volunteers make the most of their lunch hour.
- Community Centers
Taking place after school is let out, local gathering spots are hosting
struggling readers and trained tutors as they do some serious studying. Operating
under the No Child Left Behind Act, opportunity exists for local residents
to receive compensation for time spent teaching the children in their neighborhoods
to read.
